Thinking about a new studio in the garden?

I finally took the plunge and commissioned my own studio for the garden.

So PuddleDay Press has a new home.

I was inspired and very jealous of BBH member Marian Carter's wonderful chapel like studio space where she creates and displays her amazing reduction linocuts.

If you get a chance to visit Marian's Open Studio or attend one of her Lino courses you will se what I mean.

My current space at Baas Farm is great - good size, nice location, lovely studio neighbours including BBH MEMBER Eleanor Long and excellent value. 

Unfortunately difficult to enjoy after work and I'm just not getting there often enough to get my work done. (It can also be a bit 'fresh' during the winter months.)

Studio to rent

Anybody looking for a studio space near Broxbourne / Wildlife Park?

Space at Baas Farm will be available in the Spring.

So I have just had a small studio (8"x10") installed at the bottom of my garden.

Will it inspired great feats of print & textile art? - I live in hope.

Will I just turn in to a frozen gnome forgotten amongst the bamboo or a hermit hiding in my folly? - comments, opinions and responses not required!

Only one way to find out!

After a lot of research I finally settled on a building from 'my place in the garden'.

Some of you might have come across their adverts in artists & illustrators, etc.

They have their factory and showroom on the business venture park (old aerodrome next to Waddesdon Manor).

It took 8/10 weeks from ordering but only 2 days to instal foundations and erect.

Before the work began - ...........

Lots of weekends clearing & levelling the site - don't ever plant laurels. 

A nightmare to remove after 14 years growth.

Now I have a beautiful, clean, highly insulated space to create, to tutor and to bring together all my essential materials.

Very happy with the quality, care and attention (and I have got a 10 year guarantee).

Just need to get in there and work.

Wish me luck.

Need to build a path through the mud first.

Obsidian Gallery - a review from Kim

Dear BBH Members ,

 

Back from my holidays now and just giving you the up date on the BBH Obsidian exhibition which ended in Oct.

Trisha the gallery owner was very pleased with standard of entries there was only two that I felt did not make the grade - very poor mounting and framing . I was over ruled by the other judges but I will email the member  to let him know that he only just squeezed in .

Thank you to all the other members for a very high standard and the response  - we are only as good as our last exhibition  - so keep the good work up .

Sales were a little low  just  over 10 framed pictures sold but  fantastic comments from  the many  visitors  that went  to the gallery. 

 The next BBH exhibition is in March 16th -30th 2015  in the Letchworth Arts Centre - this is a very big space so do look at joining us.  As I mention last time there is a big event in the main gallery the week before so I will be handing out information to the visitors as I am exhibiting in the small foyer the two weeks before .

 Also the Letchworth Arts centre do have an active brochure which that circulate, so this again may bring the visitors in .

The booking form will be put on the BBH website later with the drop off and collection dates etc included.

 

 

 

I attach information given to me by Jeannelise Edelsten , a BBH member who is exhibition  at The Paper mill in Apsley and a poster of my November exhibition at The Dutch Cafe in Hatfield on the A1 000 road going toward Potters Bar - strange place but pretty big ( I have 22 picture up do not know what response I will get -  only old people and day tripper from the local funny farm  there when I took measurement on Friday !!!but lets hope some people with money and interested in art stop to have a light lunch- you never know . )

 

 If you are taking part in an exhibition before Christmas drop me a line and I will forward it to the members.

 

On another note if anyone knows of an interesting venue that sort of fits in the 3 counties on Beds Herts & Buck for another exhibition next year  ( 2015 )  for the BBH - bear in mind it needs to be mediun to large size site as we have 60 members  - so drop me a line and I will check it out .

Our second exhibition is a show of works by Paula Rego and Honoré Daumier entitled Paula Rego/Honoré Daumier: Scandal, Gossip and Other Stories. 

Although more than a century separates these two artists, the works of Rego and Daumier reveal a wide range of common concerns and approaches which will be explored in this exhibition. Both are consummate storytellers who use printmaking (in the form of lithographs and etchings) to bring their visions, stories and politics to a wider audience.

Paula Rego, who trained at the Slade School of Art, has won a wide and admiring audience for her psychologically charged presentations of human dramas. Women are often placed at the centre of her work and characters also frequently take the form of animals for satirical effect.

Works by Honoré Daumier have been selected from the more than 4,000 lithographs made during his lifetime, principally for the publications Le Charivari and La Caricature. As a caricaturist Daumier was a wry observer of human comedy who exaggerated the aspirations, affectations and failings of society, producing work that was considered seditious enough to earn him a six month prison sentence.

Organised in association with the Fundação D. Luís I, Casa das Histórias (Cascais) and Marlborough Fine Art (London), this is the first exhibition to present Rego and Daumier's work in dialogue.

The Folio Society 2015 book illustration competition

The Folio Society have just announced details of the 2015 book illustration competition.

Colour Mixing one day course

I am running a colour mixing course on Friday 24th October when we will be mixing a huge range of colours from 7 main printmaking inks including various blues and reds, coloured blacks and browns and over fifty shades of grey! These make extremely useful charts for future reference. The day will cost £60 and it will run from 9.30 until 5.30pm.

Reduction linocut – cut, print and reduce £80
Friday 10th Oct 2014 9.30am – 5.30 pm note extended time
Cut away gradually at the soft Japanese lino, printing a new colour after every stage with good registration. This is highly enjoyable seeing a print emerge in stages and to produce a set of prints with 3 or 4 colours.

 

Photopolymer or Solar print £50 plus materials
(£6 for A5 ) Friday 19th October 2014 or on request. Reproduce drawn, painted or photographed images. Create a wide tonal range or deep linear grooves depending on image and exposure. A quick non toxic technique -the image is transferred onto the plate using only a light box and water! Suits all abilities.

Drypoint with Monoprint £60 plus paper charge
Fri 14th November 2014
With an image as a starting point. Using hand and electric tools, create a linear feast of textures. These will print in a variety of tones and shades. Relief inking techniques will bring your image to another dimension. Suits all abilities.

 

Monoprint – Roll, resist, and paint. £60 plus paper Friday12th Dec 2014.
There are many ways to approach monoprint and Bodenpress has a unique approach. These techniques can involve applying rolled ink, masking areas, wiping and drawing into ink and building up layers of viscosity colour to produce the final image. Quick painterly prints or long built up layers – it is knowing when to stop that is difficult! Suits all abilities.

 

Understanding colour mixing – Friday 24th October 9.30-5.30pm – note extended time. £60
In this course we will be mixing and making charts of: coloured GREYS, various BLUES and REDS hues, coloured BLACKS and BROWNS, GREENS. Demonstrations and using 8 inks to mix the main colours as well as concentrating on the above.

 

Screenprinting £60 plus paper charge.

Tuition available on request - Mon, Wed or Fridays. Transparent and opaque flat colours overlay each other to build up the image using stencils and drawing fluid for linear work. Strong arms needed.

 

Collagraph – collage cast and create
£130 plus paper charge Fri 23rd January plate making and Fri 30th 2015 printing 2 day course
Collage a plate using textures to create an image. Cast and paint textures using filler, carborundum and glue - ideal for foliage or landscapes. The sealed plates are printed on the second day using various techniques including coloured rubs and rolls. Fabric as well as paper can be printed on. A good all round course for all abilities.
